The electrification of Tanzania is going well, according to the figures put forward by the government. In addition to the increase in national electric power , the Ministry of Energy managed to increase the national electric coverage rate from 67.8% in 2016 to 84.6% in 2020. This represents an increase of 16 , 8% in 4 years.
Peri-urban and rural areas are particularly targeted by this electrification program, and today there are 9,112 villages served, compared to only 2,018 in 2015.
The authorities also plan to start construction of a 2,115 MW hydroelectric plant. No less than USD 622 million has been allocated to the project, which should enter the start-up phase in a few months.
