As part of the recommendations made by a 7-member Joint Committee on the Sokoto Independent Power Plant (IPP) in its report submitted to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Wednesday, it said an additional sum of N1.6 billion is required to complete the 9-year old 38 MW IPP, Daily Trust reports.

The chairman of the committee, Engineer Bello Sulaiman said that the project was of enormous importance to the economic well being of the state, as such, no amount spent on its completion would be too much. Bello who was the former Minister of Power, said the sum of N3.2 billion was so far spent on the project which was 70% completed. According to him, the total contract sum was N5.2 billion but the final cost would be below the original amount.

He explained that the plant was designed to use diesel but being too costly, the state was looking at the possibility of using Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG). In his remarks, Governor Tambuwal described the IPP as a very vital and key project. He said it was necessary to assess what needed to be done to complete it so that it could serve the purpose for which it was conceptualized.
