The Rwandan government is planning to introduce strategic cooking gas reserves so as to cushion the country against potential shortages, officials have said.
Oreste Niyonsaba, the Manager for clean cooking and biogas use at Energy Development Corporation Ltd (EDCL), told The New Times that the proposed reserves will cater for the rising demand for cooking gas. He said that a feasibility study is set to be carried out in the 2019/2020 fiscal year to ascertain the demand for cooking gas across the country.
The country will set up reserves capable of supplying cooking gas to Rwandans for at least three months in the event that importation is halted, he said. The study, he said, will also reveal the amount of money that is required to set up the reserves as well as their location.
