Group Executive Director, Engineering and Technical Services of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Engr Bayo Ibirogba, has expressed fear over the preference and continuous use of firewood over gas for cooking.
This, he said, has contributed to the high level of deaths among exposed adults, adding that if not properly checked, the situation will do more harm than good.
Engr Ibirogba made these known in an address on the occasion of the corporation’s 2013 Health Safety and Environment week (HSE) with the theme “Overcoming HSE Challenges in NNPC”.
He said, “the population of Africa is currently estimated at about a billion and is expected to double by 2040. Note, this will amount to disaster when over 70 percent of its population still relies solely on the use of firewood for cooking.”
Engr. Ibirogba advocated a minimal discouragement and departure from the conventional use of kerosene and firewood as they have a clear negative impact on the lives of the average Nigerian adult.
