Security personnel have arrested four suspects, including a lawyer, for alleged oil theft. The suspects were alleged to have stolen over 2,000 metric tonnes of diesel belonging to the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) in Brass, Bayelsa State.
The suspects were arrested in Lekki, Lagos State. It was learnt that the lawyer simply identified as Angelo is a Lagos-based legal practitioner and counsel to one of the accomplices, Chief Ebi
Our correspondent gathered that Ebi, who is a community leader in Twon Brass, was said to be at large and had been declared wanted by the police over illegal movement of stolen petroleum product from Bayelsa State to Lagos.
A security source, who confided in National Mirror, alleged that Ebi was once arrested early in the year over involvement in the ownership of an unlicensed vessel along Akassa Waterways.
The source, who is an official of the Joint Task Force (JTF), said details of Ebi’s arrest were being expected to facilitate his prosecution.
He said: “The lawyer and the three other persons were arrested at an area known as Outside Bar in Lekki Area of Lagos State while negotiating the transfer of the stolen AGO to a buyer. They had successfully moved the vessel from the Bayelsa waters into the Lagos axis. The surveillance team was detailed to allow negotiation for sales commence before their arrest. We could not apprehend the Chief, he escaped.”
