The Federal Government will soon be addressing power challenges in rural communities across the country, Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has said.

A statement quoted Onu as saying this when the Senate Committee on Science and Technology visited the ministry on oversight function.

Onu said that the ministry would soon introduce small hydropower projects using existing dams to address the energy needs of rural communities of the country. The minister said the projects and transformers had already been designed indigenously by the ministry’s engineers.

He said that two dams – Oyan dam and Ikere Gorge dam – were selected for the pilot scheme while the ministry was making efforts to improve and expand the scope to cover other parts of the country.
