In Ethiopia, the government is suing Azeb Asnake (photo), the former executive director of the Ethiopian Electric Power. She is accused with 50 other people of corruption in connection with the construction of the Great Renaissance dam.
The construction of the 6,450 MW plant, estimated at $ 4 billion, is being carried out by Ethiopia with equity with the support of its diaspora. Ms. Asnake and her co-defendants are being prosecuted for having received money on the part of the project relating to the cleaning work of more than 123,000 hectares on the construction site. The amount evoked by the prosecution is 2.5 billion birr ($ 78 million), the equivalent of 50% of the value of the deforestation contract.
Last September, the Ethiopian Electric Power Board of Directors dismissed the director for reasons that had not been disclosed.
