Environmentalist calls for scrapping of NOSDRA

NOSDRAAn environmentalist, Mr John Aseme, has called on the Federal Government to scrap the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, for constant oil spills in the Niger Delta region.

Aseme made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

“We thought that NOSDRA will curtail the recklessness of oil companies on the environment, but to our greatest dismay, we wake up everyday to be hit with oil spills; that is quite embarrassing.

“There are other oil producing nations in the world, but this regular oil spillage is not recorded. Why is it constant in our country?

“I think NOSDRA should be scrapped and its entire mandate be ceded to NESREA because NESREA has been steadfast in policing our environment,” he said.

Aseme, who is the National Coordinator of Environmental Watch, a non-governmental organisation, decried the problem of oil spill in the region.

He advised the government to entrust the responsibility of checking oil spills to the National Environmental Standards Regulations and Enforcement Agency (NESREA).

The environmentalist said NESREA had successfully regulated environmental businesses in Nigeria for the time being and curtailing negative impacts on the environment.
