chevron_logoControversy is trailing the oil and gas spills which occurred about a month ago at the Funiwa Field of Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, in Koluama One and Two in South Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State. Chevron’s General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Deji Haastrup in a statement made available yesterday to Sunday Mirror described the report of the spills as false and misleading to the public.

But in a swift reaction, General Secretary of Koluama Youths Organization, Engr. Ebrasin Leghemo, described the oil firm as a bunch of liars and insisted that Chevron had no moral obligation to prove that there was no spill in the area.

He said, “Even today, we challenge Chevron Nigeria Limited to convey the world press conference in Koluama and tour the sea shore to verify their claim that no oil spill occurred. As I speak with you now, I am at the sea shore where the chemical was coated with the crude oil. “I’m on top of it now.

What are they denying when the chemical that has coated the crude oil is visible? Let them come with government officials, NOSDRA and other relevant agencies to prove their point that there was no oil spill here in the Atlantic Ocean, whether they will not be embarrassed by their claim.”

But the Chevron replied:”Any report of spill in our CNL Funiwa field is false in its entirety and we advise all enquiries about CNL operations to be directed to us instead of third parties.” Haastrup stressed the firm conducted its operations to ensure the safety of the people and the environment at all times.

“CNL reiterates its commitment to effective environmental management in line with one of its core values of protecting people and the environment in all its operations,” the official said. Leghemo alleged that the explorative activities of the oil firm had caused colossal damages to their people which he described as pathetic.

He went on:”They are using divide and rule tactics to exploit the people and Therefore, we cannot see development. If you come to Koluama 1 and 2 including other areas, Chevron has not provided us with good Health Center or Cottage Hospital to take care of the sick, no pipe borne water if there is any, let Chevron tell Nigerians.
