In Algeria, electricity demand has dropped by 10% due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This statement was made by Chahar Boulakhras, the Chairman and CEO of Sonelgaz, the national electric company.
According to the official, this decrease is due to the slowdown of all the economic sectors of the country which operate at minimum capacity. The country has implemented containment of several of its wilayas since March 23. A precaution which has been renewed several times and which is still in progress, until at least the end of May, according to the forecasts of the authorities.
Meanwhile, the director of Sonelgaz reassures that “the continued mobilization of production teams across all stations in the country, and which was triggered at the beginning of the spread of this pandemic”. A mobilization which has, moreover, enabled an optimal supply of energy throughout the country, he welcomed.
